Why We Host Nigerian Websites on VPS Rather Than Shared Plans
Shared hosting puts hundreds of websites on one server and divides its resources between them. It is cheap, but performance depends on everyone else, security depends on the weakest site, and you can only change the settings the provider exposes.
We chose not to offer shared plans for Nigeria. Every website we host runs on a customer's own VPS with dedicated vCPU and RAM on KVM. That decision suits the kinds of sites our customers run: online shops, booking systems, fintech landing pages connected to sign-up flows, news sites with traffic peaks, and agency portfolios with many client projects. All of them benefit from predictable resources and full control.
A VPS also grows with you. One server can host a single important website today and a dozen client sites next year, and you remain in control of the configuration the whole time.
Choosing a Hosting Control Panel for Your Nigeria VPS
A control panel turns a bare server into a friendly hosting environment where you can add domains, create databases, issue SSL certificates and manage email through a web interface. The right one depends on how many sites you host and who will manage them.
Commercial panels
Well-known commercial panels offer polished interfaces, reseller features and broad documentation. They suit agencies hosting many client sites and businesses whose staff already know them. They carry licence costs, which you arrange separately.
Free and open-source panels
Several free panels cover the essentials: websites, databases, SSL, email and file management. They are a good fit for a business hosting its own sites.
No panel at all
Developers often prefer configuring Nginx or Apache, PHP-FPM and the database directly, managed through version-controlled configuration. This uses the least memory and gives the most control.
Whatever you pick, install it on a fresh operating system and before adding sites, as most panels expect a clean server.
Building a Fast Web Stack on a Lagos Server
A typical website stack on a Nigeria VPS has four layers, and each can be tuned for speed:
- Web server. Nginx handles many simultaneous connections efficiently and serves static files quickly; Apache offers .htaccess compatibility; LiteSpeed-compatible servers are another option. Many setups put Nginx in front of Apache to get the best of both.
- Application runtime. PHP-FPM for WordPress, Laravel and most CMSs, Node.js for JavaScript frameworks, or Python and Gunicorn for Django sites. Choose current, supported versions.
- Database. MariaDB or MySQL for most CMSs, PostgreSQL for many custom applications. Give the database a sensible share of RAM for its buffer pool.
- Cache. Redis or Memcached for object caching, plus full-page caching where the application supports it.
With SSD storage underneath and dedicated cores, this stack can serve busy Nigerian sites from even the entry VPS plan, which starts at 6 cores and 10 GB of RAM.
Making Websites Load Quickly on Nigerian Mobile Data
Most visitors to Nigerian websites arrive on a smartphone, frequently on mobile data. Hosting in Lagos shortens the distance their requests travel, and IXPN keeps traffic between Nigerian networks local. The rest of the speed gains come from how you build and serve pages.
- Compress text responses with gzip or Brotli at the web server.
- Resize and convert images to WebP or AVIF and serve sizes that suit phone screens.
- Lazy-load images and embeds below the first screen.
- Set long cache headers for CSS, JavaScript and fonts so repeat visits download almost nothing.
- Remove unused scripts, particularly heavy third-party widgets.
- Enable HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 to reduce connection overhead.
Lighter pages are not just faster; they cost your visitors less data, which Nigerian users notice and appreciate.
Setting Up SSL and HTTPS for Nigerian Websites
Browsers label plain HTTP pages as not secure, and search engines prefer HTTPS. For any site that collects details, from a contact form to a checkout, encryption is a basic requirement.
On your VPS you can issue free, automatically renewing certificates through an ACME client or your control panel's built-in SSL feature. If your business requires an organisation-validated or extended-validation certificate, you can install one bought from a certificate authority instead.
After installing certificates, redirect all HTTP traffic to HTTPS, enable HSTS once you are confident every subdomain works over HTTPS, and check that your pages do not load images or scripts over plain HTTP. Renewal should be automatic; add monitoring that alerts you if a certificate approaches expiry.
Email Options for a Business Domain Hosted in Lagos
You have two main choices for email on a domain whose website runs on a Nigeria VPS.
Host mail on the VPS
Most control panels include a mail server with webmail, spam filtering and mailbox management. This keeps everything on one server and suits businesses with a handful of mailboxes.
Use an external email service
Larger teams often point their domain's MX records to a dedicated email provider while the VPS serves the website. This separates email reputation and storage from the web server.
In both cases, publish SPF, DKIM and DMARC records in DNS. Without them, messages from your domain, including order confirmations and password resets, are far more likely to be marked as spam by major mailbox providers.
Designing Backups for Websites on a Nigeria VPS
On a self-managed VPS, you are in charge of backups, which also means you can make them better than a typical shared plan. A sound strategy has three parts:
- Frequency. Back up databases at least daily, more often for shops and booking sites where orders arrive constantly. Files can be backed up daily or weekly depending on how often they change.
- Location. Keep at least one copy outside the VPS, in object storage, another server or an offsite location, so a server problem does not take your backups with it.
- Retention. Keep several generations, for example seven daily and four weekly copies, so you can recover from problems noticed late, such as a hacked plugin.
Most control panels include backup scheduling, and command-line tools such as restic or Borg provide encrypted, de-duplicated backups. Whichever you use, test a full restore every few months.
Protecting Websites and Visitor Data on Your Lagos Server
Websites are attacked constantly by automated bots looking for weak passwords and outdated software. A few habits block the vast majority of attempts:
- Keep the operating system, control panel, CMS, plugins and themes updated.
- Run each website under its own system user so one compromised site cannot read another's files.
- Use a host firewall that exposes only web, mail and administrative ports you actually need.
- Protect admin logins with strong passwords and two-factor authentication.
- Add a web application firewall module or rules to block common attack patterns.
- Monitor logs and file changes so you notice problems early.
Sites that handle personal data from Nigerian customers should also limit what they collect, store it securely and decide how long to keep it.
Hosting Many Client Sites for a Nigerian Web Agency
Web designers and agencies in Lagos and across Nigeria often host their clients' sites themselves. A VPS with a multi-site control panel is ideal for this: each client gets a separate account with its own files, databases, email and SSL, while you manage everything from one server.
Plan capacity carefully. Group small brochure sites together, and give busy shops or high-traffic clients more headroom or their own VPS. Watch memory usage across the month and move to a larger plan or a second server before resources run short.
Agencies also benefit from the predictable billing of a VPS. You pay for one server, set your own hosting prices for clients and keep full control of service quality, without depending on a shared host's policies.
Moving an Existing Website to Our Lagos Infrastructure
If your site is currently on shared hosting in Nigeria or on a server abroad, moving it to a Lagos VPS follows a predictable path:
- Set up the VPS with your chosen panel and matching PHP and database versions.
- Download a full backup of files and databases from the old host, or use your panel's migration tool if both hosts support it.
- Restore the site on the VPS and test it by editing your computer's hosts file.
- Recreate email accounts and forwarders, or confirm external email settings.
- Lower DNS TTL in advance, then update A records to your new Nigerian IP address.
- Issue SSL certificates once DNS points to the new server.
